Facilitating communication of science among university researchers, students (K-12), and the public is an important UA faculty obligation. I presently oversee education and outreach at Biosphere 2, and help the UA College of Science with its significant outreach endeavors. I have also taught a service learning and outreach course, Sonoran Desert Discovery (ECOL 464/564), in which enrolled UA students develop and give workshops on local natural history and ecology. Students 'teach' at Biosphere2, the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, Flandrau Science Center, in K-12 classrooms, and at many other public venues and events.
Outreach Scholars at Biosphere 2
STEM Education, Leadership, & Collaboration
Biosphere 2's Science Academy hosts many different education and outreach programs. Each summer we host weeklong residential programs for middle and high school students from both local communities and from more than 20 different states and multiple foreign countries. Outreach Scholars are highly motivated undergraduate and graduate students looking to share the wonder of STEM disciplines, hands-on research, and personal growth with these great young students. See the Biosphere 2 website for more information.
In The Media...In January 2016 I was the guest on Mrs. Green's World radio program. Listen to the interview that covers a wide variety of Biosphere 2 and education/outreach topics including the Saturday What If? series, the Biosphere 2 Summer Science Academy for middle and high school students, scholarship opportunities, the importance of learning science, UA Carson Scholars, UA Outreach Scholars, The Martian with Matt Damon, girls in science, social media, One Young World, Rafe Sagarin, and much more.

The Sonoran Desert and Sky-Island Region is one of the most beautiful and diverse on the planet. Within just a few hours explorers can visit the top of Mt Lemmon, a saguaro forest, local riparian areas, and the amazing Gulf of California. Experiential education opportunities abound which make for great day trips, field courses, and more.
